Ubtan: A Bride’s BFF

The West is just wisening up to holistic remedies and beauty, but subcontinental beauties have always been a step ahead!

Take turmeric for example – its full of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties! Whether you’re a bride or bridesmaid (or just the last one in the five rows dancing to ‘Kaala Chashma’ at six different weddings) this wedding season, you need turmeric in your life. If you think turmeric is just for acne and stomach cramps, think again: turmeric is what makes ubtan great, and ubtan is what has made brides’ complexions great for centuries.

Turmeric contains the anti-inflammatory curcumin, Vitamins A, C, E and K, and zinc, which we all know are awesome for skin. It also contains a measure of Niacin, which is used as an anti-aging ingredient in lots of popular skincare products.

Now, on to introducing some ubtan greatness to your life:

You will need:

Turmeric: 1 tsp

Milk: 2 Tbsp`

Honey: ½ tsp

Orange peel



If you’re dealing with acne, dark spots and scars and dull skin, take advantage of orange season, and eat a few! Then, remove all the veins and fibre on the inside of the peels, wash, and lay them out to dry in the sun for a few days. When the peels are cracking-dry, run them through a blender to form a powder. Store in an airtight jar.

Add half a teaspoon of this powder to your ubtan once a week to benefit from skin-brightening Vitamin C.




Add some yogurt to your ubtan mix to let the Lactic Acid present in it work its magic on your skin. Lactic Acid dissolves dirt and dead skin cells, and tightens the skin. It also works as a skin lightener, which means if you’re worried about any pigmentation or a stubborn tan that is fading away patchily, make the yogurt addition every couple of days.


If your skin is super sensitive, but you still want the benefits of ubtan and a good cleansing while you’re at it, add a teaspoon of oats, and one extra teaspoon of milk to help integrate them better into the mix. Oatmeal moisturizes, soothes, and cleans the skin; combined with ubtan, it will make the complexion appear brighter and calmer.
